Speech in Bloom: Spring-Themed Language Activities

As spring arrives and flowers bloom, it’s the perfect time to refresh your therapy sessions with fun, functional, and seasonal language activities. Here are a few SLP-approved, spring-themed ideas to help students expand their vocabulary, practice expressive language, and build communication confidence: 

1. Nature Walk & Talk
   Head outside with students for a walk around the school grounds. Have them name what they see, hear, and smell. Use sentence starters like “I see a ___,” or “The bird is ___.” It’s great for descriptive language and expanding utterances.
2. Springtime Categories
   Use picture cards or real objects to sort into spring categories like bugs, flowers, weather, and clothes. This is a great way to target categorization, word retrieval, and semantic mapping.
3. Garden Story Sequencing
   Use a spring-themed picture sequence (planting a flower or a caterpillar turning into a butterfly) to work on narrative skills. Have students retell the story using transition words and full sentences.
4. Bug Hunt Bingo
   Create or download a bingo board of spring-themed items (ladybug, worm, leaf, cloud, etc.). As students find items or spot pictures, prompt them to describe or use them in a sentence.
5. Craft & Chat
   Make simple crafts like paper flowers or raindrops. While creating, prompt conversation using WH- questions (“What color is your flower?” “Where does rain come from?”) to build receptive and expressive language.

Spring is all about growth and new beginnings, and that’s true in speech and language development, too. Whether you’re working in preschool or upper elementary, these seasonal activities can spark joy and support communication goals.
