Back-to-School Survival Tips for School-Based Therapists

The back-to-school season brings a whirlwind of IEPs, service schedules, classroom consultations and a whole lot of sticky notes! Whether you’re a seasoned school-based therapist or starting fresh in a new district, August is the perfect time to get organized, grounded, and confident before students walk through the door.

Here are some therapist-approved tips to help School-Based Therapists start the school year strong:

1. Gather Your Tools and Templates

Stock up on printed forms, digital trackers, therapy games, reinforcers, and session logs. Having your essentials ready means you can hit the ground running and avoid scrambling later.

2. Build Your Master List Early

One of our school-based OTs shared a great planning tip:

“I prepare for the new school year by gathering master schedules and a list of my students’ teachers so that I can build my schedule. I set up a master list of students, service type, and IEP dates.” ~Suzanne

This helps you visualize your caseload, track deadlines, and collaborate more easily with staff.

3. Be Visible & Collaborative from Day One

Pop into classrooms, introduce yourself, and start conversations with teachers and support staff. Building rapport early creates smoother collaboration and more meaningful integration into the school team.

4. Start with Strengths

Before jumping into formal testing or pulling out therapy materials, take time to observe students in natural settings. Use the first few weeks to get to know their strengths, interests, and learning styles.

5. Stay Flexible: It’s a Marathon

Schedules will change. Fire drills will happen. Keep your cool and build in time for flexibility each day. Being adaptable is just as important as being prepared.
