School-Based OT Services Description:
Occupational Therapists facilitate access for students in their curriculum at school. Occupational Therapists function as a related service provider in the school systems. Their role is to collaborate with personnel within the school to provide direct, indirect and consultative services for students whose fine motor, sensory, and visual perceptive limitations limit their ability to fully participate in school activities. Occupational Therapists often provide assistance with the following school related activities:

  • Fine motor, visual motor and visual perceptual skills which cause limitations in students’ ability to write, perform desktop activities, and attend school activities.
  • Ability to function independently in the cafeteria, classroom, physical education class, recess and the bathroom.
  • Behavior and sensory strategies that allow teachers to successfully instruct the students and improve their learning.

Physical Therapists facilitate access for students in their curriculum at school. Physical therapists function as a related service provider in the school systems. Their role is to collaborate with personnel within the school to provide direct, indirect and consultative services for students whose physical limitations limit their ability to fully participate in school activities. Physical Therapists often provide assistance with the following school related activities: 

  • Navigation of the school premise including stairways, hallways, ramps, doorways and the school bus
     
  • Independent access to the cafeteria, classroom, physical education class, recess and the bathroom.

Speech and Language Pathologists facilitate access for students in their curriculum at school. Speech and Language Pathologists function as a related service provider in the school systems. Their role is to collaborate with personnel within the school to provide direct, indirect and consultative services for students whose communication skills limit their ability to fully participate in school activities. Speech and Language Pathologists often provide assistance with the following school related activities:

  • Speech and Language skills which cause limitations in students’ ability to communicate within the classroom.
     
  • Behavioral and sensory strategies that allow teachers to successfully instruct the students and improve their learning and communication.
